The book Coraline is set in England, but takes place in a few different places. The first place is The Pink Palace. The Pink Palace is where Coraline and her family live. It is a pink mansion that is split up into three different apartments. The Pink Palace has an overgrown garden that is full of trees. There is also a tennis court, "...at the very back was an old tennis court, but no one in the house played tennis and the fence around the court had holes in it and the net had mostly rotted away" (4). The other world is another one of the settings in the novel Coraline. It can be compared to Alice and Wonderland's other world because it is fun and new, but also spooky and full of tricks. The other world was created by the other mother, and it's purpose is to seem more attractive than the real world so that Coraline stays. In the novel, the other world starts out very lively, just like the other mother, but as time goes on, and Coraline begins to challenge the other mother, the world starts to fall apart. "Outside, the world had become a formless swirling mist with no shapes or shadows behind it, while the house itself seemed to have twisted and stretched. It seemed to Coraline that it was crouching, and staring down at her, as if it were not really a house but only the idea of a house" (105). Once Coraline returns to reality, the real world seem much more pleasant.
