A Brief Summary of Coraline
On a very miserable summer day, Coraline and her not-so-loving parents move into the Pink Palace. This house is split into three apartments, and they share the house with two old ladies, Miss Forcible and Miss Spink, retired actresses, and the ring master for a jumping mouse circus, Mr. Bobo. While exploring the house, Coraline discovers a locked door, and when her mother unlocks it, the door is bricked off. However, one day she is left alone at home, and she tries to open the door once more. This time, there are no bricks. She ventures through the door, walks through the corridor, and discovers an apartment much like her own. She starts exploring and sees her mother cooking dinner. But something just isn't right... this woman is much taller and thinner, has long fingers and finger nails painted blood red. She turns to Coraline, and all Coraline can see are the other mother's cold, black button eyes. After spending some time in this world, and realizing that everyone has buttons for eyes, she discovers that she enjoys it much better than the real world where she is constantly being ignored. Her other parents tell her that she can stay in their world forever, but only if she sews buttons over her eyes. She does not want to go through with that and decides to go back to her real parents. When she returns, no one is home. Coraline's parents have been taken by the other mother, and she needs to go back through the door to save them. Once she makes her way back to the other world, the other mother coldly greets her, and Coraline is thrown into a glass mirror in a long narrow hallway. In there she meets ghost children that have been trapped by the other mother. They tell her how the other mother stole their soles, and that they are trapped behind the mirror. Coraline eventually gets out of the mirror and decides to play a game with the other mother. A finding things game. "Yes, I think I like this game. But what kind of game shall it be? A riddle game? A test of knowledge or of skill?" "An exploring game, a finding things game" (page 92).
